VERNON OICKLE

This book chronicles some of the worst, from shipping to railway tragedies, to tornadoes and hurricanes, to epidemics and environmental catastrophes and more. Read these powerful and poignant stories of the regions darkest days and their human and environmental costs:
- On February 15th, 1982, off the coast of Newfoundland, 84 lives were lost in the worst offshore drilling accident in Canadian history when the Ocean Ranger oil rig was swamped by a giant wave
- On December 6, 1917, in Halifax, more than 2000 people died, and 9000 were injured and maimed in the biggest human-made explosion the world had ever seen
- Just off Peggy’s cove, Nova Scotia, on Sept 3, 1998, 229 people aboard Swissair Flight 111 died when the plane slammed into the North Atlantic
- At 5:18 on May 9, 1992, 26 mineworkers were killed in an explosion so strong that it blew the top off the Westray mine entrance, more than a mile above
- At 12:10 AM , Monday September 29, 2003, Hurricane Juan made landfall in Nova Scotia as one of most powerful and damaging hurricanes to ever affect Canada
